HomeNow is a campaign promoting career pathways in Queensland’s housing and homelessness sector. HomeNow is delivered by sector peak bodies Homelessness Queensland and Q Shelter, under the Workforce Connect Fund, funded by the Queensland Government.
HomeNow showcases the many rich and rewarding career pathways that exist in our unique sector, to attract more dedicated, passionate and skilled people to a sector they may not have previously considered.
The HomeNow campaign consists of a website, videos, social media accounts, appearances at key career and training events, and regular email updates to interested subscribers.
One of the best things about our sector is the variety of roles available, which all contribute to making a difference to people experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness. Many roles involve working within communities to provide direct support to find secure and sustainable housing for people, while there’s also a whole range of opportunities behind the scenes in other disciplines and pathways.
With so many career pathways and organisations in Queensland’s housing and homelessness sector, there’s a wealth of paid, voluntary and work placement opportunities in the sector. The great thing about working in housing and homelessness is the diverse variety of jobs and pathways available, which welcomes all backgrounds and skill sets. Depending on the specific role you’re interested in, you may not need a qualification or experience. Some frontline or specialist roles may require a certificate, diploma or degree, and there are a variety of pathways available through TAFE and university.
There’s never been a better time to gain a qualification in Community Services at TAFE, with Certificate III, IV and Diplomas offered under the Fee-Free TAFE courses program.
It takes a mixture of skill, passion and dedication to work in this field, and the diversity of roles available means all kinds of skills are needed and have their place. Given the nature of the sector being support services, people who have strong ‘soft’ skills particularly thrive in this field. If you want to spend time working in Australia you will need a work visa. The type of visa you may get will depend on how long you want to stay, it is likely that you will need to have an occupation that is on a skills shortage list.
